You are the Arcanum's youngest spell-maker. The flood spell you finished last month is carved in a thousand-year-old ruin, in your handwriting. In 20 days it is read before the king.

Where it begins

Rain hammers the gallery windows as a ruin-runner sets a stone tablet on your bench, old dust still sifting off it.

Fourteen lines, cut deep. Your hook on the g, your habit of crossing sevens, your seal, chip and all. Still Water, finished last month.

Above line one, a row in the old tongue: do not let them read this aloud.

The Rector's steps are on the gallery stair, and the stone is on your bench.

You

The spell-maker

You built Still Water line by line.

Twenty-five, the Arcanum's youngest spell-maker, your seal cut four years ago. You test a spell the way you test a movement before you case it: does it run?

You check your hands, even when they are steady.
Character

Tavish Crane

He brought you your own handwriting

A ruin-runner, lean and sunburned, dark hair tied with cord and a scar through his left eyebrow. Two names are inked inside his wrist. He will not sit down.

Wants
To close Ostrum for good.
Hides
What else he saw on the walls of Ostrum.
Tell
Licks his cracked lower lip before certain answers.
Says
“I don't go back for maps. I go back for people.”

Place

The Composers' Gallery

Your bench under the clock tower: hot brass and chalk, the great escapement ticking through the wall.

Place

Ostrum ruins

A dry city around a lake that is only cracked clay; dust grits your teeth and the silence has no birds.

Rule

Composition

A spell is built line by line and holds only in its maker's hand. Anyone may read a finished spell aloud, and the maker feels every reading behind the breastbone.

Rule

Ruin dust

Ostrum's dust drinks water from skin. One night inside costs cracked lips, then fever.

Rule

The equinox

In 20 days the Rector reads Still Water before the king, on the equinox steps.
