You are the Queen's champion, and you have never lost a duel. This year the trial stone names your opponent, and every spell you cast heals him. Prince Daven is the son of the king you blame for burning your village. Nobody at either court can explain it, and the prince is not surprised.

Where it begins

Every ten years, Aurel and Sarn send one champion each to Concord Field. Seven trials keep the treaty alive. The seventh must name one victor, or the war comes back.

You are the Queen's champion of Aurel: nine fights won, never a step out of the circle. High Marshal Edra Kane raised you in her barracks after your village burned.

Tonight the trial stone names Prince Daven of Sarn your opponent. Your first strike splits his cheek, and you watch the cut close under your knuckle. In forty-nine days, one of you must win.
