You are the last free pilot who runs the Teeth. The man who won the river's last wish has not aged a day, and that wish drowned your town. He needs your helm. Twenty-one days until the source closes.

Where it begins

Dawn on Cooper Row. You stand knee-deep in the mud over your street, your own door hinge in your fist.

A skiff ties up at the landing. Emmett Lowell steps off: seven springs since he won the river's wish, and not one line on his face.

He needs a pilot for the Teeth, twenty-one days before the source closes. Dorrit Callow has already signed with the mayor's boat.

A crowd with gaff hooks is coming down the landing. In forty yards they will see his face.

You

The pilot

You read the water for a living.

The last free pilot on the Tamber who runs the Teeth and comes back dry. Your father taught you to read the river, and your street lies under four feet of mud.

Hides
Why he needs the source so badly.

Place

Cooper Row under silt

Your drowned street in Brackwater: river mud to the window sills, wet plaster, old bread ovens, and a landing at the end of the row.

Rule

The wish

Every seven springs the Tamber grants one wish at its source, the words exactly as said. What it gives, it takes from downstream.

Rule

Held years

The hand that touches the source stops aging for seven springs.

Rule

The Teeth

White rapids below the source. Portaging takes thirty days, so a racer needs a pilot who can run them. A wrong line takes pilot and boat both.
