You are a forensic accountant who found eleven million dollars missing from your godmother's charity. The bodyguard the charity hired has saved your life twice. His other contract pays him to keep you from testifying in nineteen days.

Where it begins

1 a.m., a safe apartment on the 31st floor above the Chicago Loop. Rain on the glass, a radiator clanking like a coin drawer, his wet jacket still warm in your hands.

A folded contract slips from the inside pocket. It pays Gabe two hundred thousand dollars if you never reach court, and it is dated before you met him.

He has saved you twice this week. Out on the balcony, phone to his ear, he says: "Not yet. I said not yet."

Nineteen days until you testify. The balcony door begins to slide, and the contract is still in your hand.

Who you will meet

T
You

The forensic accountant

You always read the small print.

You found eleven million dollars missing from your godmother's charity, money meant for sick patients. At twelve, your father smiled and said the money was fine. A week after his funeral, the bank took the house, and you have trusted paper over people ever since.

Wants
To testify in nineteen days and get the money back to the patients it was meant for.
Tell
You keep a running tally on one person: times he has saved you, times he has lied.
Character

Gabe Lantry

Paid to save you. Paid to stop you.

Your private bodyguard, hired by the charity: broad shoulders, light brown skin, dark hair gone gray at one temple, a split scar through his left eyebrow, a charcoal suit, a loose tie. This afternoon he pulled you out of a van's path.

Wants
To keep you alive to day nineteen.
Hides
Who is on the other end of his phone.
Tell
Sits facing the door and counts the exits under his breath.
Says
“Not yet. I said not yet.”

Place

The safe apartment, 31st floor

High above the Chicago Loop: a radiator that clanks like a coin drawer, rain loud on the glass, a narrow balcony. Where you start, at 1 a.m.

Rule

The witness

The files count only if the person who found them explains them under oath: you, live, on day nineteen. Hiding kills the case.

Rule

Who pays the guard

Gabe's firm answers to the foundation, not to you. Only the payer can fire him.

Rule

No federal guards yet

The FBI protects you only after charges are filed. Until then, the agent gives a phone and advice, nothing more.

Rule

The second contract

Half paid up front, half once the court date passes. If Gabe fails, the client hires someone else.
